  Bike Month & To-Work Week

What can you do to help GEORGIA celebrate Bike Month (May) and Bike-To-Work Week (May 12-16, 2008).

1.  Commute by bicycle.  It can be good for you, the environment, and traffic.  Plus, research is showing that having more cyclists on the road, leads to safer cycling conditions... and just maybe, the more cyclists that motor vehicle commuters see, the more likely they'll join in cycling too.  The Ken Kifer and LAB websites have good bike commuting information.

2.  View LAB's radio and video Bike Month PSAs and 50 ways to celebrate Bike Month.

3.  Join GEORGIA BIKES! today (or donate now).

  INITIATIVES

Georgia Bicycle Law Enforcement Pocket Guide

The “Georgia Bicycle Law Enforcement Pocket Guide” is now available for law enforcement agencies and officers statewide.  The Guide was modeled on a Florida document that is now in its 5th printing and that truly fits in a standard-sized front shirt pocket. As in Florida, the pocket guides will only given in mass to training officers, Sheriffs, and Chiefs of Police who will pass them on to their certified officers with an accompanying short presentation or lecture. The pocket guides can also be carried by bicyclists... perhaps in under seat bags. It could prove to be a handy reference for a cyclist and others since it includes chapters on traffic rules and bicycle crash investigations.

To cover final development and production costs of this pocket guide, GEORGIA BIKES! raised funds from individuals and accepted major donations from Bicycle Savannah, Tony Serrano Memorial Ride, Bike DeKalb, Southern Bicycle League, and Fayette Biking For Life.  Kenneth Rosskopf, an attorney in Decatur and a cyclist, generously offered to match cyclist monetary contributions to this effort up to $2,000.  Donations are still welcome to cover distribution and future reprinting costs.  See the Support part of the website for more information.

Requests from law enforcement agencies for copies of the guide or for more information should be directed to GEORGIA BIKES! (GeorgiaBikesHQ@GeorgiaBikes.org or P.O.Box 49755, Atlanta, GA, 30359 or 404-634-6745). Single copies can be mailed to those individuals who send a stamped, self-addressed envelope.  The Guide, without color cover, can also be viewed/downloaded here or from the Georgia / General Resources page.

Georgia SHARE THE ROAD Plate

LATEST (September 2006) -- The Georgia SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plate is starting to show up on cars, vans, and trucks across Georgia.  It was a long and arduous, but worthwhile effort to get to this wonderful point.

If you were one of the folks who applied for the plates ahead of time and helped meet the state's requirement of 1,000 applications before they would start printing plates, thank you!!!  NOW, when your tag renewal period rolls around, go to your county tag office with your $25 application receipt.  They will use that as credit for the plate's one-time, $25, plate-manufacturing fee.  You will still be responsible for the annual, $25, specialty tag fee and any of the other annual standard vehicle and tag fees.  Please understand that the 194 county tag offices and all their staff don't necessarily all operate identically, so it may not always go as smoothly or quickly as one would hope.  If the counter staff are having trouble locating the Georgia SHARE THE ROAD plate in their computer system, let them know that the plate's code is: RD. Depending on each county tag office's policies and plate stockpiles, they'll provide you with either a SHARE THE ROAD plate or temporary plate (and mail you the actual plate shortly).  If your tag renewal period has already passed this year and you don't want to wait until next year, the county tag office staff should be able to set them up with a plate "early" (at some additional fee).

For those folks that did not pre-apply, the state is no longer “taking application“ for the plate.  In fact, they stopped on May 26... the day the processed the 1,000th application. NOW, when it is someone's normal tag renewal period, they can order the plate as they would any of the State's other existing specialty plates.  Each “new plate purchaser“ is responsible for a one-time, $25, plate-manufacturing fee; an annual, $25 specialty tag fee; and any other standard, annual, vehicle and tag fees. Depending on each county tag office's polices and plate stockpiles, they will dispense either a SHARE THE ROAD plate or a temporary plate (and mail you the actual plate shortly therafter).  If someone's tag renewal period has already passed this year and they don't want to wait until next year, the county tag office staff should be able to set them up with a plate “early“ (at some additional fee... likely $25 too).

WAS (December 2005) -- The Georgia SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plate is really going to happen... once the state receives at least 1,000 applications of $25 each in 2006.  So lets make it quick and fun.  Lets turn it into a race.  The challenge is a friendly, unofficial, competition with the new NASCAR plates to be the first to the 1,000 point line.

On Tuesday, January 3, go to the local “tag office” in your county of residence.  Take your identification and $25 directly to the counter staff asking to apply for the Georgia SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plate.  Be sure to get and save your receipt.  Once there are at least 1,000 applications (hopefully we will have won the race with NASCAR), the state will begin manufacturing the plates and distributing them to those county tag offices where applications were submitted.  You will can get your tag on your normal renewal date; or you have the option of getting the plate early for an additional $25.  The standard fees will be a one-time, $25, plate manufacturing fee (which will be credited if you provide your application fee receipt) and the annual, $25, specialty license plate fee.  You are still responsible for your standard, annual, $20, registration fee and any of your applicable ad valorem taxes.

Note that ALL of the $25, annual, SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plate fee is intended to go to the Governor's Office Of Highway Safety (pending the state's yearly general appropriations process) for use in motorist and cyclist safety, education, and awareness projects and programs.  Note also that $14.75 of the NASCAR plates annual $25 fee will go to the Governor's Office Of Highway Safety.&n
