Thanks to Georgia’s “Share the Road” specialty license plates, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is supporting statewide and local bicycle advocacy in Georgia. GOHS awarded a three-year grant (2010-2013), using funds collected from the specialty plates, to Georgia Bikes! and partner nonprofits in Atlanta (Atlanta Bicycle Coalition), Athens (BikeAthens), and Savannah (Savannah Bicycle Campaign).

Programs enabled by the Share the Road Tag Grant include:

• Dedicated bicycle advocacy staff in the organizations named above
• A first-ever, statistically valid, statewide survey of attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions regarding bicycling, the desire for better facilities, and the rights & responsibilities of cyclists on Georgia's roads. Results are online here
• Statewide media campaigns to address issues discovered in the survey. Radio PSAs funded by the grant are online here
• Seed grants for new and emerging bicycle advocacy organizations
• Funding for Share the Road signs and sharrow lane markings
• Bicycling event safety signs.
