The League of American Bicyclists has developed a useful tool for comparing major American cities & bicycling friendly communities on rates of bicycling, mileage of bike lanes & paths, and the demographic breakdown of bicycle commuters. The online reporting tool can be accessed here. This data can be very useful for demonstrating to local elected officials and transportation planners that communities can experience dramatic increases in bicycling with thoughtful, affordable investment in a network of safe & convenient bicycle facilities, regardless of the community's size, geography, or climate! For many communities, the cost of one highway interchange improvement can be used to make an entire community bicycle friendly for decades! NOTE: All data in this reporting tool is from 2009 and is taken from the 2009 American Community Survey. A related resource was created by a master’s student in the Environmental Studies program at the University of Oregon. The graphic shows the ACS bicycle commuter mode share and the number of female and male bike commuters in each state. It is available here and pasted below:
